The five lessons

Lesson 1

How much does fire weigh?

This is the thirty-sixth lesson of our Big Course. Along the way, you'll understand the real relationship between fire and water, understand the surprising thing that fire is, and see into the heart of an atom.

If you stay to the end, you'll also learn a new way to solve a problem that will make high school chemistry class quite a bit easier.

This is a free preview.

Lesson 2

What happens when you light a candle?

This is the thirty-seventh lesson of our Big Course. Along the way, you'll learn to see the parts of a flame, understand what a candle is REALLY made of, and see what a candle would look like in Nanoworld.

Lesson 3

Why is a fire bright?

This is the thirty-eighth lesson of our Big Course. Along the way, you'll learn the terribly surprising identity of the yellow part of the flame, the fundamental force that makes the blue part of the flame...and the biggest thing in the Universe.

Oh, you'll also hear the story of poor Michael Faraday. Poor, poor Michael Faraday.

Lesson 4

Why is wood so burn-y?

This is the thirty-ninth lesson of our Big Course. Along the way, you'll learn what things that burn REALLY have in common, the story of the man from Manchester who discovered the most powerful thing in the Universe, the true shape of energy, and A REALLY STRANGE WAY OF THINKING ABOUT WHAT A FIRE REALLY IS. (It sorta sneaks up on you.)

Oh, you'll also glimpse the specific reason why chemistry is so terribly taught. A little personal history in that one.

Lesson 5

Why is a blanket so cozy?

This is the fortieth lesson of our Big Course. Along the way, you'll learn why wind is cold, why you're warm-blooded, what a calorie is, and why the Sun shines. (This is what workaholic quantum physicists refer to as an "ambitious" lesson.) It'll wrap up everything we've learned in "Fire" quite nicely...

Secret Sixth

Why does water put out fire?

This is the "Secret Sixth" lesson; specifically, the one for "Fire". Along the way, you'll learn when you can fight fire with fire, why blowing on a candle puts it out, and what you should NEVER do to put a candle out.
